Tutti coloro che desiderano studiare bene la teologia dovrebbero studiare la storia della Chiesa.  Ci è voluto del tempo perché la Chiesa arrivasse ai metodi di esegesi che attualmente usa.  Inoltre, la dottrina biblica, che la Teologia sistematica studia, ha una storia che influenza profondamente il modo in cui esprimiamo le convinzioni dottrinali oggi.  Abbiamo bisogno di conoscere il passato per capire la chiesa attuale e il nostro ruolo in essa.

Dobbiamo anche sottolineare la particolare importanza dello studio della chiesa medievale. Molti protestanti comprendono come la Riforma protestante abbia plasmato la chiesa attuale. Ma pochi capiscono che la Riforma ha risposto alla chiesa medievale. Ad esempio, la chiesa medievale ha messo in pratica alcuni presupposti su come la chiesa e lo stato dovrebbero interagire. I riformatori protestanti risposero a questo quando parlarono del rapporto tra chiesa e stato. Conoscere il periodo medievale della chiesa ci aiuterà a capire più pienamente perché i riformatori protestanti parlarono di alcune questioni e cosa intendevano in gran parte del loro insegnamento.
